OVERVIEW
psiTEC (Psionic Tactical Enhancement Chip) is a cranial implant that gives you access to a wide variety of attacks and tools without taking up valuable attach points you could be using for your various guns. psiTEC is modular; we will be releasing new weapons for the psiTEC system, all of which will be added through our auto-install system.
USAGE
psiTEC utilizes both verbal and menu-based commands for your convenience. The verbal commands are, by default, on channel 0, but we strongly suggest you change this to any other channel of your choice to avoid triggering your psiTEC during normal speech. From here on out, we will refer to this channel (whatever you’ve chosen) as the “command channel.”
The psiTEC also listens on channel 6969, in case you would like to create gestures to trigger your favorite psiTEC functions.
The psiTEC uses dialogs as well. To trigger the dialog menu, click on the back of your head, where the psiTEC is, or say “menu” on the command channel. You can also use the included gesture to set off the menu.
MODULES
psiTEC comes with a number of pre-set modules, and more are being made as plug-ins (To develop your own modules, see this tutorial). Here is the list of modules included in the default setup:
- Burn - Set a target on “fire.” These pretty particle flames will cling to your target and do a continual stream of damage until the target is dead.
- Sling - Send your target flying up to 4096m in the air. *NEW IN 2.6*
- Kill - Shield-through, tracking death.
- Summon - Rezzes objects from inventory (SEE INVENTORY SECTION).
- Trap - This is the original “inescapable” trap. Can’t sit on it, can’t sit on anything outside of it… if your target finds a way out, it’ll just follow them there and re-solidify.
- Find - Create a particle stream to your target so you can find them in a crowd.
- Scan - Get very specific information about your target (SEE SCAN SECTION).
- Berserk - Kill everybody in range once (except those on your Friends list)
- Hunt - This nasty little bugger will scour an entire sim (up to 768m altitude) looking for your target, and kill/sling them.
- Imitate - Creates an object, named after your target, that will speak anything you say on channel 1 and shout anything you say on channel 2.
- Shockwave - Cause damage and push everybody in a 20m radius.
- Telepathy - Follows your camera, allowing you to zoom in on conversations to hear them.
- Smoke - A thick cloud of smoke that tracks your target and interferes with their visibility.
- Trace - Creates a tracking stream of particles to help you keep track of where your target is. Different from “find” in that it does not also lead your target to you.
- Sweep (not in menu) - Gives a list of everybody in range.
- Blind - Creates a blinding prim that blocks your target’s visual position whenever possible (including mouselook) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Distort - An invisible prim that covers your target’s whole screen; when accidentally clicked, will completely distort their avatar *NEW IN 2.6*
- Freeze - Trap your target in a block of ice *NEW IN 2.6*
- Drag - Creates an invisible physical cage around your target; click on your target and drag to drag them around. *NEW IN 2.6*
- Enslave - Traps your target and forces them to follow behind you *NEW IN 2.6*
- Hop - Stand on an avatar’s head (once) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Stand - Stand on an avatar’s head (continuous) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Meet - Move to an avatar (once) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Chase - Move to an avatar (continuous) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Rush - Move to your camera position (once) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Cam - Move to your camera position (continuous) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Move - Move to a specific location (see MOVEMENT FUNCTIONS) *NEW IN 2.6*
- Gravity - Change your personal field of gravity (see GRAVITY) *NEW IN 2.6*
To use the module menu, bring up the psiTEC menu (see USAGE), select your module, and select your target from the list of targets that results. If your module is not a targetted one (such as the telepathy and shockwave modules), the module will trigger when you select it from the menu.
To use verbal commands to trigger the module, say the name of the module on the command channel and a fragment of your target’s name. This is not case-sensitive. It is recommended that you use at least a 3-letter fragment, to avoid targetting the wrong person. For example:
kill luc aubret
will very definitely kill Luc Aubret if he’s in range.
kill luc
will kill the nearest avatar with “luc” anywhere in their name.
Note that the name fragment does not have to be from the beginning; you could also say “kill aub” as a means of seeking Luc Aubret.
NOTE: Please don’t kill Luc Aubret. He doesn’t much like that.
MOVEMENT FUNCTIONS *NEW IN 2.6*
The movement functions (hop, stand, meet, chase, rush, cam, and move) use a supercharged physical movement to yank your avatar to the desired location. While this is designed to work through most normal physical barriers (like walls and ceilings) it cannot always be successful. In the event that your path takes you through an object psiTEC cannot break through, the movement will end at that object.
The “end” command will end any continuous physical movement module, just like a normal module.
Using the “move” command is a bit different. If accessed from the menu, it will prompt you for a location. This location can be entered in one of the following formats:
- <x,y,z> (i.e. “<128,128,64>”)
- x,y,z (i.e. “128,128,64″)
- x y z (i.e. “128 128 64″)
When using the verbal command, simply put these coordinates after the “move” command. Examples:
- “move <128,128,64″
- “move 128, 128, 64″
- “move 128 128 64″
Note that the move module will work as best as possible, and can traverse pretty long distances. However, since (like the others) it uses physical movement, it is not foolproof.
GRAVITY *NEW IN 2.6*
The gravity module changes your personal gravity level, and can be adjusted to make you either super heavy or super light. This gravity level only affects you.
Gravity values range from -6 to 5. Negative gravity levels will make you lighter (-5 is no gravity, -6 is reverse gravity), and positive gravity levels will make you heavier.
When accessed from the menu, you’ll be given a list of gravity options. Select one of these options or “Normal” for normal gravity.
When using the verbal commands, follow the “gravity” command with your choice. Examples:
- “gravity -5″
- “gravity level -5″
- “gravity 0″
- “gravity normal”
Note that using the “end” command will return gravity to normal.
SCAN
When you scan an avatar, you get a dialog with information and options. Here is how this is read:
Profile: Luc Aubret (IN GROUP) [Obviously, "Luc Aubret" is the name of the agent. (IN GROUP) means that he is in the same group as the object.]
Born: 2005-07-31 (Ratings: 119) [Self-explanatory birthdate, and total positive ratings received.]
Height: 1.928800m / Mass: 1.817061kg [This is almost completely useless information.]
Position: <48,136,500> (1m) [PDRSF] [Sim position, distance from you, and permissions on the land he occupies (Push, Damage, Rez, Scripts, Fly).
Status: NORMAL [as opposed to AWAY, BUSY, or TYPING]
Locomotion: STANDING (0 m/s) [Form of movement (as opposed to FLYING, WALKING, HOVERING, SITTING, SITTING ON GROUND, or RUNNING) and velocity]
Attachments: SCRIPTED [As opposed to NON-SCRIPTED or NONE.]
The options provided are Key (which tells you that user’s key), Find, Kill, Crush, Orbit, and Burn. Click any of these things, and it’ll do it to that person.
OPTIONS
There are a number of options provided to improve and personalize your psiTEC experience. These are available through the “Options” button in the menu, or by speaking them aloud as commands (case-insensitive).
- Help - This provides a full help menu, as well as access to extra copies of the inventory deletion script (SEE INVENTORY SECTION), this manual, and the menu gesture (SEE FAQ).
- Channel - Change the verbal command channel on your psiTEC.
- Force - This allows you to set the force for certain modules (SEE FORCE SECTION).
- Reset - This forces a reset of all the scripts in your psiTEC. This will put settings back to defaults.
- Refresh - This does NOT reset your scripts, but manually updates the module, inventory, friend and enemy lists (SEE FRIENDS & ENEMIES) if, for some reason, this is necessary.
- a-LINK - (Formerly “proTEC”) This activates/deactivates the a-link, the protocol that allows psiTEC to connect to proTEC and other aubreTEC products (SEE A-LINK SECTION)
- Hide - Makes your psiTEC invisible (effects will still be visible).
- Show - Makes your psiTEC visible.
- Effects - Set your effects: PRIM (Prettiest), PARTICLE (Same as version 1.0), or NONE (No effects/sounds/animations at all)
- Guard ON/OFF - Turns the Guard function on or off (SEE FRIENDS & ENEMIES).
INVENTORY
psiTEC also gives you access to your favorite inventory items. Once these items have been placed into the psiTEC, they will be available from the menu using the “Summon” button (just as you would run a module) or on verbal command using “summon” or “rez” and a fragment of the inventory object’s name. For instance:
rez pose
rezzes “Pose Stand” roughly 3m in front of you.
summon pose stand
also rezzes “Pose Stand” roughly 4m in front of you.
psiTEC includes several inventory items to help you get started. You may delete these if you do not find them useful. They include the following:
- Platform - a roughtly 25 x 25m platform for privacy/workspace/what have you.
- Pose Stand - a simple pose stand for adjusting your psiTEC or other accessories.
- Worklight - a small light that follows above your head, providing illumination in dark places.
- Installer - this little gadget allows you to install non-transferrable items WITHOUT dropping your psiTEC.
To prepare your own inventory items, follow these steps:
- Make sure the object you are putting into psiTEC is COPIABLE. psiTEC cannot rez non-copiable objects.
- Obtain the “inventory script” from the psiTEC using Menu> Options> Help> Script.
- If your object is modifiable, place this script in the object.
- Place the object into psiTEC’s inventory. If your object is non-transferrable, you will not be able to drag it into psiTEC while it was attached. Summon your installer, and place the item (up to 5 of them) into the installer instead, and follow directions to transfer them to your psiTEC.
The inventory script allows the object to be deleted by psiTEC’s “end” command. If you cannot add this script to the object, you will need to delete the object manually each time it is rezzed.
You can also remove objects from your inventory automatically, by either a) using the “Remove” button in Options, or b) saying “remove” or “delete” and then a fragment of the inventory object’s name. For instance:
delete stand
removes “Pose Stand” from inventory.
remove pose stand
also removes “Pose Stand” from inventory.
WARNING:
aubreTEC Labs is NOT RESPONSIBLE for loss of inventory items due to a mistake or hiccup in this process. Use ONLY copies of items for this purpose. Additionally, if you do not know how to add scripts to an object or objects into another object’s inventory, please consult the SL documentation. These are basic principles of SL interaction, and we can’t provide support on these matters.
Note that psiTEC automatically refreshes all lists (inventory, modules, friends and enemies) when it detects changes to its inventory (such as notecard edits or new items/modules), so it will do this after you add your item.
FORCE
The force setting allows you to control the power of certain modules. At this time, of the included modules, only Burn uses the force feature; the rest simply hit as hard as possible. Future modules will use this feature as well.
The usage of the force setting will depend per module, and plug-in modules that use them will typically give some idea of what you can expect. For Burn, force 0 means it will do nothing but look pretty, force 1 is a painfully slow kill, and force 10 will kill a stationary target within a couple of seconds.
Force can be set via the Options menu, or by verbal command, (i.e. “force 7″).
FRIENDS & ENEMIES
Inside your psiTEC is a notecard labeled simply “Friends/Enemies.” This notecard contains your friend and enemy lists. The “Friends” list is used primarily for eliminating targets from the “Berserk” command. When you use “Berserk,” all but those contained in your friends list will be targetted. The “Enemies” list is used primarily for the Guard feature. When turned on, Guard will automatically fire upon enemies when they are detected (kill in combat-enabled sims, orbit in safe sims).
It is important to correctly format your card, or psiTEC may improperly read your lists. Place your friends in a comma-separated list (case-insensitive) on the same line as the “Friends: ” heading. This list may continue onto a new line, but allow it to do so naturally (do NOT hit “Enter” or “Return” to get a new line, or psiTEC will not read this new line).
Do the same with enemies.
Since psiTEC automatically refreshes its lists when it detects a change in inventory, check these lists to make sure it has listed your friends and enemies properly (since psiTEC is not interested in case-sensitivity, these names will appear in all lower-case).
NOTE: PLEASE CHANGE THE NAMES USED IN YOUR FRIENDS/ENEMIES NOTECARD. WE USED RANDOM OR FICTIONALIZED NAMES TO POPULATE THESE CARDS, AND WE DON’T WANT YOUR PSITEC ATTACKING INNOCENT BYSTANDERS. YOU ARE FULLY WELCOMED TO LEAVE LUC’S NAME ON YOUR FRIENDS LIST, HOWEVER, AS HE DOESN’T REALLY LIKE BEING ORBITTED.
A-LINK
The term a-LINK now refers to the communication protocol between psiTEC and other aubreTEC products. For instance, when a-LINK is enabled, proTEC users will get retaliation options from their psiTEC whenever their proTEC detects a hit. Osprey owners can click on certain parts of the ship to bring up their psiTEC menu for battle. We hope to expand this network to include other future products as well. To disable this feature, click “a-LINK” in the Options menu.
PLUG-INS
The psiTEC can be upgraded with separately-purchased modules, as available. To install a module, purchase it from aubreTEC labs or SLE, rez the module, and follow the instructions the module gives you.
UPDATES
psiTEC is constantly being worked on to keep it relevant and effective. Because of this, we have a built-in, automated update system that ensures you have the latest version at all times.
Your psiTEC will check our servers once a day, on login, to see if any updates have been released. If they have been, our update servers will automatically issue you a new version. You may also use the “update” command in your psiTEC menu to force an update check (if, for instance, you accidentally declined the offer of a new psiTEC on login). If you are receiving updates on login, it means that your current version is outdated.
There are two kinds of psiTEC updates. The most common will be a “firmware update.” This is issued when we are making changes to scripts or inventory, and will update your currently worn psiTEC, so that you will not need to reload your old modules, replace your old Friends/Enemies list, or reinstall your custom inventory. If you receive a “firmware update”, simply rez it on the ground and click it to begin the upgrade process, or you may ask it to give you a whole new unit.
The second type of update, a full product update, occurs when we have made signifcant changes to the product or have changed its outward appearance. You will receive a whole new boxed psiTEC, which you should unpack and replace your old psiTEC with.
If, at any time, you wish to receive a fresh, new copy of your psiTEC, use the “reissue” command to be given the latest version.
ENDING MODULES
You may stop running modules by using the “end” command. This command will end particle effects and delete psiTEC-rezzed objects within a 100m radius. This option is also available in the Options menu.
DIY (DO-IT-YOURSELF) MODULES *NEW IN 2.6*
If you know a bit of scripting, you can create your own psiTEC modules using this easy tutorial. You may sell these modules at your own discretion, so long as you obey our terms and conditions. You do not have to share profits with us.
DISCLAIMER
aubreTEC urges you to use your modules responsibly and with respect for others. Read the SecondLife ToS before casting offensive modules. aubreTEC claims no responsibility for the consequences of using our bots, weapons, modules, or other products.
FAQ
This section is provided to answer some frequently-asked questions.
QUESTION: Why don’t you have a constantly-running “kill everybody” feature?
Because that sucks, to be honest. It’s unsporting as hell, griefy, and can cause major abuse problems if you forget to turn it off when changing sims.
QUESTION: I tried to orbit/pulse/shockwave etc. somebody and nothing happened. What’s that all about?
In version 1.12, Linden Labs added a “push restriction” option to parcel owners. This allows certain parcels to restrict scripts that push from working on those parcels.
QUESTION: I tried to kill/burn/etc. somebody and they didn’t die. Why?
These options only work on damage-enabled parcels.
QUESTION: I tried to blitz somebody and all he did was float around kinda weird for a bit.
Yeah, blitz is an unstable weapon. When it works, it WORKS, but it’s dependent on a number of variables including sim dilation, physics fps, etc. and is therefore a bit dodgy.
QUESTION: Why won’t the installer let me put non-copiable objects in it?
Attached objects can’t rez non-copiable objects. Your objects must have at least copy permissions.
QUESTION: What if I can’t add the inventory script? Can I still put the object in?
Sure you can. All the inventory script does is allow the psiTEC’s “end” command to delete the item. You can add an item without this script in it; you’ll just have to delete it manually, is all. Also, remember that modifiable objects with non-modifiable scripts still show up as (no modify) in your inventory, which means that even if the object shows up as (no modify) in your inventory, you may still be able to add our script to it.
QUESTION: How do I use the gesture?
This is a gesture you could create yourself; we’ve just done it for you for your convenience. The psiTEC listens on channel 6969, so you can set up any gesture you want to issue any command using that channel. Ours simply says “/6969 menu” when you press F2. Take the gesture, activate it, and hit F2 to get the menu. You may modify this to whatever button or phrase you like.
QUESTION: Why are you guys such pricks about reading the manual? I paid for the product, I should be able to ask a question without having to read a book first.
Our products are full of features. Sometimes, so full of features that we end up providing a lot of tech support to folks who get a little confused. Over 80% of our support questions from clients are answered in the manual, however. Since those 80% already have some place they can find the answer, we refer them to the manual so that we can take the time to really help the rest.
QUESTION: You smell funny.
That’s not really a question, is it?
